Celebrate our 130th birthday with us with a FREE jar of Piccalilli

August 8th, 2019 Posted by Shaws news No Comment yet

For 130 years, we have been making chutneys  in Huddersfield. To celebrate this landmark birthday, we are throwing a party on Friday September 6th, outside the Storths Mill factory on Wakefield Road; when the first 130 people to come to the Old Market Hall Gates from midday will receive a free jar of our famous Piccalilli.

One of our all-time favourites in our Heritage Range, it is a tangy condiment and is a perfect accompaniment for pork pies, hams and cheeses.

Did you know that Shaws Piccalilli is one of the few recipes that uses wholegrain mustard to give an extra crunch and pop to the sauce when you bite into the mustard seeds?

So if you are in the area do pop along and grab yourself a jar of what is possible the finest Piccalilli you can get!

Yorkshire Produce

We’re reet proud of our Yorkshire roots and not surprising really when you realise Yorkshire is God’s Very Own Country and home to some marvellous tasting food.

Firstly, Shaws chutneys and relishes are produced t’up ‘ere in glorious Huddersfield a little hidden gem tucked away in the rolling hills of Yorkshire.  Then two of our other favourite locally produced foods that complement our chutneys are Shepherd’s Purse Buffalo Blue Cheese (an extremely creamy and decadent cheese with a punchy blue note) and Lottie Shaw’s Stem Ginger Oat Cakes with Yorkshire Rapeseed Oil (rich, moist yet crumbly savoury biscuits)

What is in the prize

A triple reason for a celebration!!

We’ve all been making our wonderful products for many decades. In fact, we are celebrating our 130th anniversary this year. Lottie Shaw’s family have been baking in Yorkshire since 1912 and Shepherd’s Purse are celebrating 30 years in cheesemaking!!

That’s why we have all teamed up to run a competition to mark the occasion. Also perfectly timed for National Picnic Week (21st-30th June).

We are offering THREE lucky WINNERS the chance to WIN a Yorkshire Picnic Selection of Shaws Caramelised Red Onion Chutney & Chunky Mango Chutney; Lottie Shaw’s Stem Ginger Oat Cakes with Yorkshire Rapeseed Oil and a Shepherds Purse Buffalo Blue Cheese quarter (375g).

Cheese, crackers and chutney

Ey Up!

It’s the grand Tour de Yorkshire from the 2 – 5 May.

Five years ago, in July 2014, the worlds most iconic bike race, the Tour de France, held its first stages in Yorkshire. Road cycling exploded, not only in Yorkshire but all over the UK. With two previous British Tour winners in 2012 and 2013 with Wiggins & Froome, cycling had now, quite literally, come home. The legacy left behind is the annual professional bike race – the Tour de Yorkshire. Fast becoming a favourite in the professional’s cycling calendar for its warm welcome (though the weather isn’t always) and cheering crowds lining the route.

Cycling is close to the heart of many at Shaws, some of our team cycle to work and others pedal up t’hills of Yorkshire at the weekends. Walter and Norman Pickles have even been known to take to the tandem especially the first weekend of May!

The Tour de Yorkshire also fields one of the best Women’s Professional Cycle races on Friday and Saturday. Taking the same route as the men’s race just a little earlier in the day. So on Friday we suggest you head out along the route somewhere between the start in Barnsley & finish in Bedale to cheer the cyclists on. Here are the times and routes to plan your day:

https://letour.yorkshire.com/tour-de-yorkshire-2019/womens-race/stage-1/map/

https://letour.yorkshire.com/media/3043/stage-1-women.pdf

Now then! You’ll be needing a little snack whilst you’re waiting patiently by the roadside for the Race caravan to come past before the main event. So we have a few suggestions for you involving Shaws Beetroot & Horseradish Chutney https://shaws1889.com/product/beetroot_horseradish/

It’s a match made in heaven for a beef sandwich but also works well with oily fish such as salmon or mackerel.

You can grab a jar from your local farm shop such as Blacker Hall just off the M1 Junction 38 or 39 https://www.blackerhallfarmshop.co.uk/or The Rhubarb Triangle http://www.therhubarbtrianglefarmshop.co.uk/Junction 29 off the M62.

If you feel like baking you could rustle up some of these easy to make pies and just take them cold with you to eat as part of your picnic the next day.

We do hope you have a fantastic holiday weekend whether your bicycling in Barnsely or eating Beetroot – ENJOY!

Chapeau to all the riders participating in the professional and amateur cycling events in Yorkshire this weekend 🚵‍♀️🚵‍♂️

10 Ways To Eat Chutney

March 26th, 2019 Posted by Shaws news No Comment yet

We’re proper proud of our finest Yorkshire Chutneys and have been producing them for over 130 years.  We use only the finest ingredients combined with years of experience to make every jar of Shaws Chutney.

We love nowt better than tucking into our reet tasty Chutney …it’s not just reserved for curries you know!

Here are our Top 10 favourite ways of eating chutney…

1. With Cheese

Quite simply, eaten alongside cheese.  It’ll take your cheese board to the next level!

2. Pair up with Cold Meats

Eaten alongside a meat platter or with a pork pie is a classic food pairing that will jazz up real simple food.

3. As a Glaze

Puree the chutney in a food processor until it becomes a paste.  Dilute the paste slightly with water and use to glaze meats and poultry before roasting.

4. Mix it for a Dip

Add chutney to Mayonnaise, Greek yogurt or hummus and mix.  Makes a fab dip for Tortillas or Crudités!

5. Pair with Lamb or Poultry

It pairs beautifully with lamb or poultry.  Just add a spoonful on the side of your roasted meat or poultry before serving and enjoy lightly spread over your meat.o

6. Serve on a Burger

Add as a topping on any burger in a bun.  We’re partial to this dirty burger found on our website.

7. A Yummy Appetiser

Add a spoon of chutney to cream cheese and serve spread on a cracker.

8. With Roasted Sweet Potatoes

Preheat the oven to 200C.  Scrub the sweet potatoes and chop into 1 inch chunks.  Combine the chutney with the veggies (use about 30g of chutney per 900g of potatoes).  Transfer to a roasting tin lined with parchment paper and roast for about 30-40 minutes until the sweet potatoes are tender.

9. Party Food

It’s a great way to sweeten up homemade sausage rolls.  Simply add a thin layer of chutney to the sausage meat and spread over puff pastry before rolling up and sealing the edges.  Alternatively, these Sausage Pinwheels are a great twist on sausage rolls.

10. On Bruschetta

Top a slice of baguette with cream cheese, chutney and grated cheese and place under a hot grill until melted and bubbling.  See the recipe here.
