Shaws Sponsor Sandwich & Food to Go Designer of the Year Competition

January 23rd, 2020 Posted by Shaws news No Comment yet

We’re really excited to be one of the main sponsors for the Sandwich & Food to Go Designer of the Year Competition and be involved with the judging alongside chef Theo Randall.

Run in association with the Sandwich Industry Awards (The Sammies), the search is on to find the nation’s leading sandwich and food to go designer.  The competition encourages creativity with the chefs being tasked to make either a sandwich or food-to-go pot in one of seven categories using the sponsors’ ingredients.  Each recipe needs to be innovative as well as deliver on taste and be commercially viable.  There is a sizeable prize pot of £5000 up for grabs!

We have supplied our Shaws Smoky Bean Salsa and can’t wait to see what recipes are created with our incredibly versatile and tasty product. The Salsa is packed with three different beans: pinto, black turtle & red kidney which make this higher in protein & fibre than most salsas. Coupled with the Spanish smoky chipotle and paprika giving it lots of flavour which is right on trend.

The competition is predicted to be tough with initial judging of recipes. These are followed by regional heats then a Grand Final. Taking place ahead of the Sammies Award Dinner at the Royal London Lancaster hotel in May, where the overall Sandwich & Food to Go Designer of the year will be announced.

Good luck everyone!

Cheese & Chutney Delights

January 20th, 2020 Posted by Shaws news No Comment yet

For all you cheese lovers out there, TODAY is National Cheese Lovers Day…permission fully granted to have a day full of lots of deliciously gorgeous, irresistible cheese!

What can make the day even better is pairing your cheese with the perfect chutney or jelly.

1.Caramelised Red Onion Chutney

Deliciously sweet & crunchy red onions give a grand mix of pickled flavours to our amazingly moreish Signature chutney.  It complements well with strong hard cheese like mature Cheddar or strong blue cheese like Shepherds Purse Northern Blue.

In fact, you can make a quick & easy Cheesy Bruschetta snack.  It’s incredibly tasty!

 2. Spiced Apricot & Ginger Chutney

This tangy chutney is bursting with the flavour of apricots and the warmth of ginger, with a hint of Indian spice.  It’s perfect with hard cheese like a crunchy Red Fox Red Leicester, crumbly Wensleydale or aged Gouda and soft cheeses such as Brie and Gorgonzola.

3.Fig & Honey Chutney

The luxurious flavour of figs infused with honey is heavenly for those that like something sweet.  It pairs beautifully with soft creamy cheeses like brie and cambazola or try a mild blue cheese like Shepherds Purse Yorkshire Blue or Bluemin White.

Makes a wonderful starter or party nibble in this Ravishing Radicchio Blue recipe. (Find the recipe by downloading our Sandwich Booklet.)

 4. Smoky Chilly Jelly

A sweet, smoky and medium heat level chilli jelly that really brings the taste of Mexican street food into your home.  It has the perfect partnership with baked cheese like feta, Camembert or brie.

Find our recipe for Smoked Chilli Baked Feta.

I think you’ll agree cheese and chutney is a marriage made in heaven.  Homage to Fromage certainly agree, as from February, at their cheese events, you’ll be able to taste 3 of our stunning chutneys (Caramelised Red Onion, Fig and Honey and Smoky Chilli Jelly) to complement the cheese at their events.

So go on, tuck in…It is National Cheese Lovers day after all!

October 10th, 2019 Posted by Shaws news No Comment yet

We’ve produced a number of different products and seen a number of different looks over the 130 years since Shaws has been in business.  We thought we’d take a trip down memory lane and share some of the highlights with you…

The Beginning…

Founded back in 1889, by George Shaw, as a General Merchants and Chemists.  The business was built up quickly with his two sons, Walter and Vincent, through an array of jams, pickles, marrow fat peas and baking powder.

Colne Valley Golcar

Post War

Norman’s son Martin joined in 1953 and later joined forces with Terence Peace.  Their joint passion for pickle continued in the post war years…

The 2019 Road World Cycling Championship this Week!

September 18th, 2019 Posted by Shaws news No Comment yet

It’s chuffin’ great that another reet good cycling event is coming to Yorkshire this week.  Harrogate is to be the home of the 2019 Road World Championships – The Biggest Sporting Event in the UK this year!

We’re huge fans of cycling ‘ere at Shaws and are often out on our bikes riding up ‘n down the rolling hills taking in the stunning scenery around Huddersfield.  We’re so excited to be visiting the event and getting up close to the action as we watch some of the races over the weekend. It will be great to see the beautiful Yorkshire countryside on the TV.

We’ll be shouting loudly for two great Yorkshire cyclists competing this week. Lizzie Deignan from Otley is a strong contender to win the women’s road race with her home advantage. Whilst Rotherham’s Ben Swift could be in for sprint finish with the elite men if he can hang on in till the end with his GB team mates.

You may even catch Mr Pickles out ‘n about over the weekend as we all know he is an avid cycling enthusiast!

Take a Look at our 130th Birthday Party Celebrations!

September 12th, 2019 Posted by Shaws news No Comment yet

We had a reet good time celebrating our 130th Birthday last Friday with our staff, shareholders, suppliers, customers and tenants.  Pictured below is Annie, five-times-great-granddaughter of our founder George Shaw enjoying the 130th birthday party celebrations.

We gave away 130 jars of our famous Piccalilli to the first 130 people that came to our Storths Mill factory on Wakefield Road.

Here’s Annie chatting to her Grandfather Martin Shaw (a fourth generation Shaw)…

Lots of fun and games at our 130th birthday party. The Onion Pong was a real favourite!

Our 130th birthday party spread – not forgetting of course our selection of chutneys and relishes – perfect with the crudités and the pork pie croquembouche centrepiece!

A fabulous day was had by all!
